Short answer: SEO (search engine optimization) helps your website rank in Google's list of links. GEO (generative engine optimization) helps your business get named inside AI answers, in ChatGPT and in Google's AI Overviews. Most small businesses need both. Start with SEO, then add GEO: much of the groundwork is the same.
What SEO does
SEO gets your website onto the first page of Google (and Bing) for the searches your customers type. Someone searches, scans about ten links, and picks one. The click is what you're after.
Google rewards pages that match the search. Your site also needs to be easy for search engines to crawl and understand, with links from other trustworthy websites.
What GEO does
GEO gets your business named when someone asks an AI assistant instead. Ask ChatGPT "who's the best accountant in Austin?" and you don't get ten links. You get a short answer naming a few firms.
You want to be one of them. This work is also called answer engine optimization (AEO) or AI SEO. The idea is the same.
GEO vs SEO at a glance
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| The goal | Rank high in the search results | Get named or cited in AI answers |
| Where it happens | Google and Bing results pages | ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini |
| What the customer sees | A list of links to compare | A short answer naming a few businesses |
| What helps most | Relevant pages, a healthy site, links from other sites | Clear answers AI can quote, facts it can read, mentions and reviews elsewhere |
| How you measure it | Rankings, clicks, visits | How often AI names you, links to you, and what it says |
Why ranking well on Google isn't enough on its own
Google now puts its own AI answer above the links for many searches, and that answer takes clicks. Ahrefs found the top result gets about 58% fewer clicks when an AI Overview appears. Seer Interactive found that brands named inside the answer get roughly twice the clicks of brands left out.
A top Google ranking doesn't guarantee a mention in ChatGPT either. When we searched "best plumber Fort Worth" on 28 September 2026, Google's top plumber wasn't mentioned by ChatGPT at all. And ChatGPT's first pick wasn't on Google's first page. Read the full example.
What SEO and GEO have in common
SEO and GEO share much of the same groundwork. Both need:
- A website that search engines and AI tools are allowed to read, and that loads reliably.
- Clear page titles and plain sentences that say what you do, where, and for whom.
- Pages that answer the questions your customers actually ask.
- Other websites that confirm you exist and are good at what you do: reviews, directories, local news.
Good SEO provides much of what GEO needs. GEO puts more weight on answers AI can quote word for word, and on what other sites say about you.
Which should a small business do first?
Start with what helps you appear in both Google searches and AI answers:
- Fix the basics. Let AI crawlers in, tidy your titles and descriptions, and add structured data so your name, services and location are machine-readable.
- Answer real questions. Put a short, direct answer at the top of your key pages, and add the questions customers ask you on the phone.
- Get mentioned elsewhere. Ask happy customers for reviews, and make sure your details match on the directories in your industry.
- Track both. Watch your Google rankings, and check what ChatGPT and Google's AI say when asked for a business like yours.
Is GEO the same as local SEO?
No. The letters cause confusion: the G in "GEO" stands for generative, as in generative AI. In local or geo-targeted SEO, "geo" means geography: showing up for searches in your area.
GEO and local SEO do overlap for local businesses. When someone asks AI for "the best dentist near me" or "a plumber in Denver", the answer draws on the same local signals, such as your reviews and your listings in local directories.

Frequently asked questions
Can GEO replace SEO?
No. GEO builds on SEO. AI tools largely read the same pages that search engines rank, so weak SEO basics usually make it harder to appear in AI answers too.
Is SEO dead now that AI answers questions?
No. People still search Google, and the links below an AI Overview still get clicks. Ranking is no longer the whole job, though. You also want your business named in the AI answer above those links.
What is GEO in digital marketing?
GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the work of getting a business mentioned or cited in answers from AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini.
What's the difference between GEO, AEO and AI SEO?
Very little in practice. All three describe making your business easy for AI tools to find and understand, so they can recommend it. GEO and AEO (answer engine optimization) are the most common terms.
Can I do GEO myself?
Yes, the basics. Make sure AI crawlers can read your site, write clear answers to common questions, add structured data and collect reviews. A tool or service helps you track what AI says about you over time.
