What is AI visibility? A plain-English guide, and how to check yours

What it means for a business, the five numbers that measure it, and a 15-minute way to see where you stand in ChatGPT and Google's AI.

By Mark Oakley, Armitage · October 29, 2026

Short answer: AI visibility is how often tools such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity name your business, recommend it or link to it when people ask questions you could answer. Good visibility means you're in the answer. Poor visibility means you're left out, even if you rank well on Google. To measure it, ask AI tools your customers' questions and write down what comes back.

Why AI visibility matters

Ask ChatGPT for the best dentist in Denver and you don't get ten links. You get a short answer naming a handful of practices. When we asked that question in 10 US cities, ChatGPT named 53 practices in total, about 5 per city. See the dentist test.

For a business, "where do we rank?" now comes with another question: "are we one of the five names?"

More businesses are asking it. DataForSEO estimates how often people type a phrase into AI tools. Its US estimate for "AI visibility" rose from 17 a month in October 2025 to 245 in September 2026.

The four levels of AI visibility

An AI answer can treat your business four ways:

  1. Not found. The answer doesn't mention you at all.
  2. Mentioned. You're named, often in a list, with nothing to make you stand out.
  3. Recommended. You're named as a good choice, usually with a reason, such as your reviews or a specialty.
  4. Cited. You're named and the answer links to your website, or quotes a page of yours as its source.

How AI visibility is measured

Every tracking tool uses its own score, but most use the same five measures. Each is worked out over a fixed set of customer questions:

MeasureWhat it tells you
Mention rateHow many of the answers name you
Link rateHow many of the answers link to your website
Share of voiceHow often you're named compared with your competitors
PositionHow early in the answer you're named. First beats last
Accuracy and toneWhether what AI says about you is right, and whether it's positive, neutral or negative

AI answers change from day to day and from person to person. One check is a snapshot. Ask the same questions every month and watch the trend.

AI visibility vs SEO

SEO gets your pages into Google's list of links. AI visibility measures whether you're named inside the answer. Much of the groundwork is shared, but a good Google ranking doesn't guarantee a mention. You can rank #1 on Google and still lose half your clicks. GEO vs SEO explains where the two differ.

What decides your AI visibility

Mostly, other websites. When we asked ChatGPT for businesses in 6 real searches, it cited 20 sources. Every source was a directory, a "best of" list or a review site. In the dentist test, 24 of the 25 sources were other websites vouching for dentists. See that test.

Your own website still matters. AI tools have to be allowed in, and they have to understand what you do, where you do it and for whom. Our GEO guide lists the six signals we check.

How to check your AI visibility in 15 minutes

  1. Write down 5 questions your customers ask. For example "who's the best [your service] in [your city]?" or "where can I get [your product] delivered fast?"
  2. Ask each one in ChatGPT and in Google. In ChatGPT, make sure web search is on. In Google, read the AI Overview at the top. Use a private window if you can, so your own history doesn't sway the answer.
  3. Write down what you see. For each answer: were you named, were you linked, where in the list were you, and what did it say? Note which competitors it named.
  4. Look at the sources. ChatGPT lists the websites it used under its answer. Those are the sites you need to be on.
  5. Repeat next month with the same questions, so you're comparing like with like.

How to improve your AI visibility

Start with the sources from step 4. Get listed on the directories and review sites ChatGPT used. Build genuine reviews and keep your business details identical everywhere.

Then make your own site easy to read. Let AI crawlers in. Say plainly what you do near the top of your key pages, and add structured data. Here's the full list of steps.

Frequently asked questions

What does AI visibility mean?

AI visibility is how often AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews name, recommend or link to your business when people ask relevant questions. It's the AI-era version of asking where you rank on Google.

How do I check my AI visibility?

Ask ChatGPT and Google five questions your customers would ask. Note if you're named, if you're linked, and who appears instead. Repeat monthly with the same questions. A free check or a tracking tool can do this for you.

Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap. SEO aims for a place in Google's list of links. AI visibility is about being named inside the answer. Good SEO helps, but a top Google ranking doesn't guarantee that AI will mention you.

What is a good AI visibility score?

There's no standard. Every tool calculates its score differently. Compare yourself with your competitors on the same questions, and watch whether your numbers rise month by month.

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

Not reliably. No one can guarantee you a place in ChatGPT's answer. Its recommendations come from what it finds about you on your own site and on other websites, so be wary of anyone who promises a spot.
